China Condemns Israel Over Gaza Journalists Killing

(MENAFN) China expressed "shock" on Tuesday following the deaths of journalists in the Gaza Strip, condemning Israel's airstrike on the besieged enclave. The Israeli attack targeted the Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on Monday, resulting in at least 47 fatalities, including six media workers.

“We are shocked to hear again that correspondents tragically lost their lives in the conflict (on Monday) and we condemn the attack,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated during a press briefing in Beijing.

Guo added that China is closely monitoring the ongoing developments in Gaza. “We mourn for the lives lost and express sympathies with the bereaved families,” he said, reaffirming the country's concern over the escalating violence.

The latest casualties bring the total number of Palestinian journalists killed in Israeli assaults since October 2023 to 246, making it the deadliest conflict for journalists in recent history. Israel has been responsible for more journalist deaths than any other conflict worldwide in recent years.

The Foreign Press Association voiced its outrage at the latest attacks, calling the Israeli military strikes the "deadliest" against journalists since the war’s onset. “The strikes hit the exterior staircase of the hospital where journalists frequently stationed themselves with their cameras. The strikes came with no warning,” the association said.

“We demand an immediate explanation from the Israel Defense Forces and the Israeli Prime Minister's Office,” the association noted, demanding an end to the reprehensible practice of targeting journalists.

Since October 2023, Israel’s military campaign in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of more than 62,700 Palestinians, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region, where famine looms.

Meanwhile, in a landmark move last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces accusations of genocide before the International Court of Justice for its actions in the region.
